GETTING TO KNOW AMBAR KELLY’S NEW ESTIMATOR
May 26 2021
Investing in the development of younger people is an important focus at Ambar Kelly. Our latest recruit is Shannon Lock, Junior Estimator, who is responsible for processing and costing tenders and proposals. A few months into the job, what made Shannon select a career in construction? Ambar Kelly finds out.
I started working at Ambar Kelly around two months ago in March 2021. Rachael Groves was the previous estimator who has recently been promoted to contracts manager. The role was reviewed by the directors, and it was decided to engage a person with limited or no experience, I was the fortunate one.
Even though I have worked in a variety of different sectors, construction is totally new for me. Prior to my current role, I was in recruitment and then hospitality. Each of these sectors can be very demanding, yet coming into construction was a big change for me. It was a challenge I relished, however.
I enjoyed the type of work I was doing in my recruitment role, however I felt as if I’d hit a glass ceiling. I recognised I needed a challenge, somewhere that I could flourish. I moved to hospitality, but I still wasn’t being pushed in the ways I wanted. Unfortunately, the pandemic wounded the hospitality industry heavily, and it became even more apparent that I needed a challenging job in a sector with greater stability.
Two months in at my role at Ambar Kelly and I am processing tenders; liaising closely with all members of the team to make sure we give the customer everything they need. I came to the industry as a blank canvas and now my head feels ten times bigger than what it was before! I have learnt so much about risers and the business. Alex, the Managing Director and Dennis, Production Manager, have shown me the ropes. I also visited a site to see RiserSafe® in real time, which helped to put the system in perspective.
I am pleased to say the Junior Estimator role at Ambar Kelly enables me to use the skills I forgot I had. I have a lot of stakeholder management from my recruitment days and this aspect is a really big part of the job here.
Another demand of this job is interpersonal skills. I’ve always loved interacting with people and building relationships. I believe this is an important attribute to have as an estimator, as you’re processing tenders and creating long-term relationships with new or existing customers. I’ll be building on this skill far into my future at Ambar Kelly.
The past year has been a real challenge in more ways than one, and I find it comforting to rest in the knowledge that I’m following a career path which I’ll enjoy and find rewarding. My short-term goal is to embed myself in this business and form a solid career path. I think the pandemic threw most of our five-year plans went out of the window - I’m living to the ‘I’ll work hard and let the future take its course’ mantra!
